Family!

In January, Tori brought her boyfriend home to see the farm. We had all met him before, since he was at Cody and Amanda's wedding, but he had never been back east. So back they came.

Clover and Evan brought them up and Cody and Amanda came too, so it was a lovely family weekend. Unfortunately, the weather was rather terrible, so meeting was just our family, since the roads were much too awful to get together with the others.

(Interestingly, the weather was also terrible on Wednesday night. But we forged ahead and drove to meeting on the WORST roads I have ever seen. It was scary. But we survived.)

Tori showing Craigen pictures of something or other.

Tori and Craigen lost their luggage. Tori had spare clothes in her closet, and Craigen got to borrow Owen's clothes while his were in the laundry.

Lincoln and Clover

Cody probably riling the kids up while talking to Mom

Lily and Rilla--twinsie friends.

Cody has a large list of books that Amanda must read. So she is making her way through them.

After some cold, blowy, snowy outside time, hot chocolate was doled out and Archie comics were read.

Homework kids.

Dad has a pair of noise cancelling headphones and they always make their way out when we all get together. Cheyenne was focusing on her homework.

Craigen and Elliot playing avalam

Blue shirt boys watching some football highlights.

Mancala

Goofy boy-o

And another one!

A wee cow with a large tulip

Orianna learned chess.

Mexican Train dominos

Things get a little crowded at Mom and Dad's when there is a big crowd. I always think of that book When the Relatives Come and the line "You'd have to go through at least four different hugs to get from the kitchen to the front room."

True story.

Lincoln's water bottle car

Rilla reading to her littler cousins

It is so amazing to see these kids growing up.

The kids have been getting interested in games for awhile now, but this weekend, it really took off! We had three games going on the kitchen table here (chess, Progressive Rummy, and Dummy) while Mexican train dominos was happening in the living room. And there was always a kid asking if you wanted to play checkers/mancala/avalam/Uno with them.

Checkers game overseen by Uncle Cody

Chess was a surprising favorite with the kids and Orianna in particular.

Mancala

These two are big fans of each other

As are these two.

Did you hear they are getting married? They are. In May.

I love this colorful Abilene-y girl!

And here is a random picture of Elsie in Gilbert's coonskin cap. No idea why. But there she is. And it made me laugh so I left it!

Winter Walk

Frozen creek

I love ice. It is never the same. But it is always intricate and delicate.

These pictures are from a few weeks back. We now have the trusses and roof plywood up!

It is coming along, just a little slow. The weather has NOT cooperated this year.

Entwined

Woodsy sunlight is the very best kind

Just... snow on a limb in front of light.

In case you needed that explained.

Sometimes I take walks and become completely enchanted by everything and think it is all magical. Then I get home and I go through my pictures and I realize that it was pretty ordinary and not very magical after all.

I can never decide if this is because I am a terrible photographer or I get too caught up in the moment.

Either way... I have fun taking pictures, so....

Frozen cobwebs in the light

More light on snow branches

Just for variety, snow on a stone wall!

By the way, I adore the fact that we own a woods with a stone wall. Stone walls are so... enduring. I don't know who built it, but there it still is.

Large snow crystals

Being a dog owner is going well. I mean they are still alive. They don't actually feel the need to listen to me, but they seem to have fun.

We need to separate them so we can train them and work with them, but when it is below zero, sleeting or at the end of a long day, taking them both for a walk at the same time seems easier.

So. Sometime they will behave themselves. Probably.

They are calm sometimes. And for all their wildness, they always stay close by on our walks. They range out a bit to find frozen rodents and deer poop to roll in, but they check on where I am every few minutes and adjust their proximity accordingly.

They do love the snow

Raspberry or blackberry bushes. Not quite sure which. But excited to find out this summer!

We have owned this property for over a year, but getting the puppies has really got us out in the woods much, much more than we did before. Which is fun! And which is why we don't know what these prickly plants produce.

Low lying sunlight on snow... No matter what, it is always magical.

ohhh....I just love it

They don't understand the charm of taking pictures.

Windswept field

So many tiny little hillocks

Which fascinated me

So I took a lot of photos

I felt a little like an arctic explorer. Except I could walk back to my cozy house in 10 minutes. Which is definitely one up on real arctic explorers.
